| After already being involved in humanitarian work in Bali for
10 years, Helen Flavel became aware of the urgent need to help the very
poor families in North Bali. These families are far removed from the
tourist areas, where higher wages are offered. These people earn
extremely low wages working as laborers in the rice fields or on farms.
The money they earn is barely enough to pay for food for their family,
let alone pay for school fees. At the same time the Helen Flavel Foundation was being created in Australia in 2004, Nyoman Sukadana and Dr. Nyoman Padmadewi registered the Peduli Sesama Helen Flavel Foundation in Bali. In 2005, a third foundation was formed by Frank Galestien and John Coumans from the Netherlands. They met with the existing foundations in Singaraja Bali, and decided to register the DO Foundation, so that they could be part of the work being done helping the children at the Learning Centre. |

| The first stage of the new building was completed in 2005,
and
the top floor was completed in December 2007. In addition to providing
class rooms, the Centre also provides 33 students with living
accommodations, food, and clothing--all free of charge. The current focus of the Helen Flavel Foundation is more and more on the provision of education, scholarships, housing, food, medical care and the Bedding Fund. The work that they do covers the entire northern region of Bali from the West coast to the East coast. They believe, and we agree, that if you can give a child an education, it will help them in their future life, far more than anything else.
