Yulia
Yulia
My name is Yulia. My family and I live in a modest house. Even though it is a simple house, I am very happy as the house represents my parents' toil in their jobs. My father, I Made Wija, worked as a security guard, and my mother, Ni Made Ritiasih, works as a seamstress. I have an older sister and a younger one. When I was studying in elementary school, I still remember that I was very naughty. My family and I lived in a wealthy area. Most children there could buy anything they wanted, but I could not even buy just one small doll. That might have contributed to why I acted out in school as I felt inferior seeing that my friends could buy anything they wanted.

I still had to deal with that until tragedy hit. As usual with every Hindu ceremony, my family would go to our native village in Abiansemal, which is where my grandparents live. In the evening, my father asked me to massage his feet before he went to work. I did not realize that was the last day I would see my father.

The next day, I woke very early in the morning as I heard there was a bomb blast in Kuta. Many people in the area screamed and said: "there was a bomb in Kuta! Where does I Made Wija work? Is he alright?" My family and I panicked hearing this news. It got worse when we could not get any news about our father for three days after the tragedy. We tried to look for my father at his office in the Dalung area and at Sanglah hospital, but we could not find him.

In the end, we went to a medium to ask about my father's condition. The medium said that my father had already passed away. A few days after that, my father's motorbike was found close to the bomb site in a broken condition. However, we still recognized the motorbike because of its Police ID. Then we realized that my father had indeed passed away.

My mother was very shocked. She cried at all the time. Seeing my mother's condition, I thought that my life was over as there was no one for us to rely on. Fortunately, my feeling was wrong. My mother could recover from her depression. She brought my younger sister and me to live in Abiansemal with my oldest sister, Nari Sundewi, while because of her job, she still lives in Dalung.

By God's blessing, my sisters and I could finally continue our studies. God sent us many kind people from the YKIP/YKIDS foundation to help us. With their support, my oldest sister, Nari, was able to study at the Ganesha University in Singaraja.

Now, I just graduated from senior high school. I am very thankful to God that my final exam grade was very good. I got 8.98 out of 10.00. I also thank God as I have been accepted to be a new student in the STIKES Wira Medika PPNI nursing school in Denpasar. I will start my first semester in the university in September this year. Being accepted at the nursing school has taken me one step closer to reaching my dream to become a professional nurse. I want to be a nurse so that I can contribute to the community in the health area.

Many people have given their contribution for my education, so I hope I will have the opportunity to give my contribution for other people too. I remember when the bombers attacked Bali; there were many people from health backgrounds who came to give their help to the victims. I want to be just like them. I hope by doing this that I will not only be able to help other people, but will also be able to make my mother, YKIP, and others proud of me.

I would like to say thank you to Mr. Mike, Mr. Scott, and friends for their part in supporting me. Meeting with them and their other students for dinner was great. I was very happy as I could talk with them about education, life, family and anything else. However, it was also funny for me because my English is somewhat limited. Sometimes, I got confused to answer the questions from them. I just smiled and asked Dewi about the questions. Still it was a great time for me as I could have new friends.

Education is very important for me to let me have a brighter future. Furthermore, if I can finish my study successfully, I can help many people by taking care of them if they are sick. By having great support from many people including YKIP and Education for the World, I am sure I will be able to reach my dream. Once again, thank you very much for the great support I have had from all of you!
